A. Background

The Master of Mining Engineering (MME) program at the University of Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran" Yogyakarta (UPNVY) was legalized by the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree Number: 2820/D/T/2001, dated August 30, 2001. It was subsequently extended by the Director General of Higher Education Decree Number: 2700/D/T/2004 dated July 8, 2004. Based on the Decree of the Chairman of the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education No. 023/BAN-PT/AK-V/S2/XI/2007 November 26, 2007; the Master of Mining Engineering obtained an Accredited Status. Subsequent accreditation by the National Accreditation Board in 2013 granted the Master of Mining Engineering a B Accredited Status.

Vision of MME UPNVY is to be a leading center of excellence  in education, research, and community service in the field of engineering of mineral mining, energy and water, and produce highly competitive graduates, quality research that is relevant to the needs of national and international markets.

The Master of Mining Engineering administration office is located at the main campus of UPN "Veteran" Yogyakarta at Jl. Condongcatur SWK 104. Since the Master of Mining Engineering program  was founded in 2001  it has produced ...graduates. The student body in the academic year 2013/2014 is...students. These students come from varied backgrounds, including government agencies, mining companies and universities. The Master of Mining Engineering offers various concentrations including Environmental Mining Engineering, Engineering Management of Natural Resources, Mineral Resources and Exploration, Management of Oil and Gas Resources.

The Semester Credit System (SCS) for the MME program is offered at 41-42 SCS, consisting of 35-36 SCS for core courses and 6 SCS for thesis research activities. The study program is designed to be completed in three semesters (each consisting of a 6 month period), thus a total of 18 months duration. The main focus of the core curriculum is Environmental Mining Engineering.

In  holding academic activities, the MME program has the following objectives:

1) To produce graduates who:

  1. master sciences and technology in the field of mineral resources, energy, and water resources;
  2. have skills in the areas of exploration, mining, mineral processing and resource management, energy, and water with respect to environmental sustainability;
  3. have the ability to develop professional performance as indicated by the ability to approach, formulate, and solve problems in the field of mining engineering.

2) Produce high quality research, relevant to the development of science and technology in accordance with the needs of the industry.

To order to achieve the goals of education, in addition to classes, the MME program conducts seminars, independent research, and community service as well as study excursions to conduct reviews of the mining industry in Indonesia.

D. ALUMNI

The role of the MME alumni is very important. They have been working in mining companies which have an international reputation in Indonesia. Periodically, they give: suggestions, feedback, and general lectures on campus. They are actively involved in MME curriculum so that it is in line with current trends.

E. IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY EXCURSIONS

In accordance with education goals in the Master of Mining Engineering UPNVY, students must understand the current condition of the mining industry. Therefore, students are required to participate in Study Excursions in the mining industry. The purpose of the study excursions is:

  1. to evaluate the problems that occurs in the field, so that students can find research topics for thesis research;
  2. to verify mining activity and its impact on the environment by observing the mining processes and processing that are carried out by the mineral and coal mining industry;
  3. to verify  a mining company's efforts to manage environmental impacts as a result of mining operations that  have been carried out by the mining company.

          The study excursions are conducted at national and international mining companies in Indonesia.  Following are the study excursion sites:

a. PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC)

PT. KPC is a coal mining company in Indonesia, which is located in the province of East Kalimantan with coal production of about 50 million tons. The study excursion to mining companies  is conducted in conjunction with a discussion about research for post-mining programs, and management of environmental impacts, due to coal mining. KPC is a mining company that has sucessfully executed miningreclamation.

b. Freeport Indonesia

PT Freeport Indonesia is one of the biggest copper mining companies in the world. The company manufactures around 300,000 tons of copper-gold ore per day. The students can see a copper-gold mine  that has mechanical equipment  with  substantial capacity, and available research ?on? environmental management, such as tailings management, which is very wide spread down to the coast (??not clear what this means)Other studies that could be conducted at this company are research on acid rocks, which produce acid mine drainage, geotechnical studies, and Carstenz waste dump management.

c. PT. Bukit Asam Coal Mining (BA)

PT. Bukit Asam Coal Mining is the only national coal mining company that operates the bucket wheel excavator for mining coal. Coal production is very large; therefore, the company pays serious attention to environmental management. Environmental management and monitoring programs are carried out very well.

d. PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT)

PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara is an international copper-gold mine company in West Nusa Tenggara province. Research on tailings management at the company's copper-gold mine is very interesting. Tailings are implemented using pipes to channel the contents/matter into the deep sea tailings. Mine water management is an interesting research topic, in addition to the management of acid mine drainage, and the study of tailings placement.

e. Pongkor Gold Mine

A study excursion to Pongkor Gold Mine is conducted to study the environmental impact of underground gold ore mining. Management of acid mine drainage is very good. Placement of mine waste water is managed in a settling pond. Research on the application method of gold mining by cut and fill is very interesting. Contact between sulfide rocks, air, and water produces acid mine drainage. Management and monitoring of mine water is a stimulating topic for thesis research

f. PT. Adaro Indonesia (AI)

PT. Adaro Indonesia is the largest coal mining company in Indonesia. PT. AI currently produces 50 million tons of coal, and this will increase to 80 million tons. Due to the very large coal production, it requires good environmental management. Many research topics are available in this company, for example, mine water management research, post-mining studies, application of Jatropha curcas for bio-diesel, CSR (corporate social responsibility), and soil research on waste dump areas. Research can also be done on geological aspects, including the issue of depositional environment of coal, ash and sulphur content analysis, which is very low on coal, maceral analysis, analysis of coal petrology, stock pile management, analysis on aspects of forestry, and analysis of soil for the post-mining land reclamation

g. PT. Aneka Tambang (Antam)

PT. Aneka Tambang is a state mining corporation for nickel, bauxite, gold in Indonesia. Nickel mining in Southeast Sulawesi province produces ferronickel. Environmental conservation aspects of mining are taken into consideration by PT Antam and one such way is to plant mangrove crops on the coast as a water breaker.

h. PT. Kelian Equatorial Mining

PT. Kelian Equatorial Mining is one of the successful gold mining companies in terms of management of post-mining land. The company is located in the province of East Kalimantan. The post-mining program is carried out by making a wet land area in mined out areas in mining sites. Post-mining environmental management is continued for 7 years after gold mining has ended. At the present time, the mined out area has  become a protected forest. Topics of research on the success of the program based on aspects of soil, water, vegetation or  other can be undertaken at the company.
